Whose Life Are You Living Anyway?

Have You Hit a Wall?

A few years ago,I opened Dr. James Hollis’s book, “Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life, How to Finally Really Grow Up.” I was met with a question that turned my world upside down. Had I ever considered that my life was being directed by my parent’s values, patterns and traditions? Had I chosen to stay asleep to my soul’s stirring to awaken? In many ways I had.

Timing is a beautiful thing. Dr. Hollis’s book came at a crucial crossroads in my life, and it was one of the catalysts that initiated my awakening. When we are seekers of truth, our soul will never be content to stay asleep. It continues to beckon us to wake up; to find who we were created to be.

Waking up requires change; and change requires immense courage. We all have a deep desire to maintain the normal, comfortable, secure and stable ways in which we live. It just feels good, it feels safe. But it doesn’t require a thing from us…we can simply continue to live on autopilot, cruising along until we finally hit a deep pit of despair, depression and loss. Women, especially, often get lost in their roles as wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, church worker, or a host of others.  At some point, we hit a wall.

Are you there? Have you hit a wall?

Perhaps you have awakened in the quiet of the night with aching questions tugging at your mind:

  •   Who am I, apart from the roles I’ve played?
  •   Surely there is more to life than the way I am living now.
  •   What’s next and who can I talk to about it?
  •   I know there’s more…there’s got to be…I just don’t know how to figure it out.
